Day Trips
Back to the top Yavapai County offers many attractions that are easy day trips from many
areas. Following are a few places to enjoy without a lot of travel time involved:

Ash Fork | Grand Canyon | Yarnell | Sedona | Jerome | Clarkdale | Bagdad
Verde Canyon Railroad | Clemenceau Heritage Museum | Sedona Heritage Museum
Page Springs | Fort Verde State Historic Park | Camp Verde Historical Society Museum

Ash Fork is a small community at the intersection of Highway 89 and Interstate 40. Once a railroad town and a destination point on Route 66, the “Mother Road,” its primary feature now is a museum that showcases memorabilia of its glory days – back to when it thrived as a destination point on the famous highway and the railroad brought passengers to the famous Escalante Hotel, a Fred Harvey House. The museum, 901 W. Old Route 66, is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Visitors will see cells from the Yuma Territorial Prison, a plethora of old photographs, a life-size street scene from early Ash Fork, a replica of a one-room school, a scale model of the Escalante Hotel and much more. For information, call 928-637-0204.

Grand Canyon Caverns were a fortuitous – but accidental – discovery back in 1927 when a man named Walter Peck came close to falling into a “large funnel shaped hole” while on his way one night to a poker game. What he had stumbled into, as he found out the next day, were caverns 230 feet below ground level that date back 345 million years. The caverns’ fascination lies in crystal formations, their size and rarity. Grand Canyon Caverns are on Route 66, off Interstate 40, about 22 miles west of Seligman. They are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, except Christmas, with tours to their 21-story depth (by elevator) every half hour. The caverns’ site also off ers a 48-space RV park, a tent camping area, horseback riding, a disc golf course, gift shop, restaurant and an inn for those who want to stay overnight. For information or reservations, call 928-422-3223 or visit www.gccaverns.com.

Travelers to Yarnell will enjoy a scenic, mountainous descent down Highway 89. The little town, with a history of gold in its hills, is about 30 miles south of Prescott and off ers interesting shopping and fi ne restaurants and most of all the Catholic Shrine of St. Joseph of the Mountains. The larger-than-life fi gures in the shrine were sculpted from reinforced concrete and depict significant events in the life of Jesus Christ by following a trail in an oak tree-shaded park. For more information about Yarnell and nearby picturesque Peeples Valley, call 928-427-9449 or visit www.y-pvchamber.com.

Sedona sits in the midst of some of Arizona’s most magnifi cent vistas of red rock monoliths – Coff eepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain – all reaching toward the sky. Sedona is a tourist mecca, with attractions to suit all expectations, from shopping, hiking, Jeep tours, and numerous fi ne restaurants to an enriching wide array of cultural opportunities, even “spiritual” experiences. In addition, Sedona is near other tourist attractions, such as Tuzigoot National Monument and Montezuma’s Castle National Monument. For people who enjoy gambling, Cliff Castle Casino is the place to go. Information about all there is to enjoy in Sedona would fi ll volumes. Visitors can fi nd out more about Sedona by contacting the Sedona Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, 331 Forest Road in Uptown Sedona, calling the center at 800-288-7336 or 928-282-7722 or e-mailing info@sedonachamber.com.

Jerome was once Arizona’s fourth largest city and sits on top of what was one of the state’s largest copper-producing mines. In its prime, Jerome bustled, not only because of its mining activity but also because of its notorious reputation for bars, gambling and brothels. Its mining days are over, but it thrives today as a favorite tourist spot. Places to visit in this little town that cascades down the sides of hills are art galleries, fi ne restaurants, a plethora of shops and the Jerome Historical Society and Mine Museum, which tells of the town’s intriguing history. For information, call the Jerome Chamber of Commerce, 928-634-2900, or the Jerome Historical Society and Mine Museum, 928-634-5477. More about Jerome is readily available by going to the Internet and typing in “Jerome Arizona.”

Back to the top Clarkdale is a quiet little community at the base of Cleopatra Hill, 6 miles down the road from Jerome. Its quaint business district off ers a fun stroll through shops, art galleries and restaurants, and it is the gateway to Tuzigoot National Monument, an 800-year-old Sinagua pueblo with a museum and hiking trails surrounding it; Tavasci Marsh, a designated birding area; the Verde River Greenway and Dead Horse Ranch State Park. For information, call contact the Clarkdale Chamber of Commerce on the corner of 9th and Main, call 928-634-9438 or e-mail cccinfo@clarkdalechamber.com.

Bagdad is one of Yavapai County’s best-kept secrets to people unfamiliar with the area. It is a company mining town that has contributed signifi cantly to the county’s economy since its founding in the 1880s. The town’s centerpiece is a 700-foot deep open pit copper mine that gives sightseers a fascinating view overlooking its operation. The mine’s owner, Freeport-McMoRan Bagdad Copper, off ers mine tours by appointment. For information, call 928-633-3490. Bagdad is 49 miles west of Prescott along Highway 96, and another surprise lies north of Bagdad on Highway 97 – Burro Creek Recreational Area. This pristine spot off ers hiking, backpacking, camping and plenty of enjoyment for bird lovers and rock hounds.

Verde Canyon Railroad becomes an unforgettable adventure for people who love to ride trains along captivating routes. Travelers hop on in Clarkdale, journey to the Perkinsville ghost ranch and return to Clarkdale. What happens in between the four hours between embarking and disembarking a comfortable ride is a trip into the wonders of nature. The historic route takes passengers through the Verde Canyon along the upper Verde River, with views of a riparian habitat, incredible geology, Indian ruins, remnants of early-day mining, steel-canopied railroad bridges and a 680-foot manmade tunnel. Each season offers its own specialty – eagle watches in winter; wildflowers and blooming cactuses in spring; the lush foliage of summer; and the blazing colors of fall. For more information about the railroad and its excursions, visit the office, 300 N. Broadway in Clarkdale, call 1-800-293-7245 or visit its website, www.verdecanyonrr.com.

Clemenceau Heritage Museum is located in the former Clemenceu Public School, circa 1923, and provides a broad slice of Cottonwood history. Displays range from home life to schoolroom to workforce, all replicas of days gone by. A comfortable bedroom sits complete with chamber pot and washstand. The kitchen’s cast iron stove stands near a red-checked oilcloth covered table, braided rag rug and open cabinet holding colorful tins. A special feature is the railroad room, a diorama of the area from Chino Valley to Cottonwood, which incorporates working train replicas representing the seven railroads that operated at different periods from 1895 to 1953. The museum is located at 1 N. Willard St. in Cottonwood and is open from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. For information, call 928-634-2868.

Sedona Heritage Museum’s unexpected gift is the original one-room cabin in its center. The cabin once belonged to Walter and Ruth Jordan who built it in 1931. Visitors can peruse photos and biographies of Sedona’s earliest settlers, view original furniture, including a pair of Morris chairs, the precursor of modern-day recliners, along with dishes, toys, and handmade musical instruments that recreate the Jordan cabin. The old sleeping porch now serves as the Schnebly room, with a collection of items from the family that named Sedona. The Jordan family became the area’s largest private employer with their 1,500-tree apple orchard and fruit packing shed. The museum, 735 Jordan Road, is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. seven days a week, except for major holidays. Throughout the year, the museum offers special programs. Complete information is available on its website, www.sedonamuseum.org or by calling 928-282-7038.

Back to the top Page Springs, located along Oak Creek, is a true discovery for people who are looking for a peaceful, rural outing. To get there, turn off Highway 89A onto Page Springs Road, which is in the Cornville area between Sedona and Cottonwood. Less than 2 miles down the road, travelers will come upon Bubbling Pond Hatchery, a large state-run hatchery that raises endangered species of fresh water fish. One-hundred springs feed Oak Creek in Page Springs, which is also a migratory corridor for more than 500 species of birds en route from Canada to South America. The trail also leads to the banks of Oak Creek and to the Page Springs Hatchery and Visitor’s Center, a coldwater fish production complex. More complete information about this area is available on the Internet. Simply type in “Page Springs Arizona” and more facts will come up, including information about popular wineries that visitors might enjoy.

Fort Verde State Historic Park comprises the four remnants of what once was a 22-building U.S. military outpost surrounding large parade grounds. It was built in 1871 to protect settlers and now contains the best-preserved example of an Indian-wars period fort in Arizona. A trio of homes on a bluff overlooking the Verde River shows how the commanding offer, doctor and enlisted men once lived in the desert heat. The surgeon’s quarters include his operating theater, once probably the only one of its advanced kind for hundreds of miles. Visitors can also meander through six room of the long, low administration building to view soldiers’ equipment from heavy wool uniforms to rifles and spent cartridges. Letters from home and photographs bring to life the fort’s former chaplains, officers and their wives. The state park, 125 E. Hollamon St., is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday. It is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For information, call 928-567-3275 or visit its website, www.azstateparks.com

Camp Verde Historical Society Museum and gift shop once was the town’s old stone grammar school, circa 1904, and it now houses the society’s collection as well as its research library, gift shop and rotating exhibits focusing on the area’s history. The museum, 435 S. Main St., Room 202, is in Camp Verde. The museum is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. For information, call 928-567-9560.
